Benin was the host of the very first Broadcast Academy training session in athletics. The Broadcast Academy services were requested by the IAAF, the Benin LOC, the CAA (Confederation of African Athletics) and the Benin television board of the ORTB, in partnership with TVMS for the preparation of the 18th African Senior Championship held in June 2012 in Porto Novo.

The Broadcast Academy trainers worked with more than 100 participants across all media platforms, the written press, television and radio and broadcast staff.

A six-day training module was split into morning  ‘all media sessions’  about athletics essentials and afternoon dedicated workshops, aimed at radio and TV commentators as well as live TV direction, with all sessions delivered in parallel.

A mix of classroom-type courses and on-site tests, delivered by our renowned trainers and experts like the legendary pole vaulting coach Jean-Claude Perrin, responsible for coaching athletes that set 20 world records under his watchful eye.

“It has been intense but good,” said Alain Suspène, trainer of the Live TV Direction module. “It was a real challenge to train the vast number of participants in live TV direction in a short span of two weeks. We are proud of the results as the participants demonstrated their passion for learning and in developing their talent. The local team is very motivated and I am convinced that the coverage of the Championship will be a real success”.

The first edition ended with the ever-popular certificate of participation ceremony, which was widely covered by the local press and received a big round of applause from a large VIP panel.
